Storyline

Horror thriller by the creator of The Purge, about a retirement home hiding a horrible secret.

Rebellious twentysomething Max is sentenced to community service at a retirement home, but the ‘special care’ residents on the fourth floor are strictly off-limits. As his suspicions grow and he digs deeper, Max uncovers a chilling secret that puts both the residents’ lives and his own in grave danger.

James DeMonaco is known for writing all five instalments of The Purge and directing the first three. In The Home, he adopts a different tone but again comes up with a strong and provocative premise. Against the unsettling backdrop of a retirement home, the film builds a creepy, unnerving atmosphere whilst raising questions about aging, generational conflict and institutional neglect. After his turn in Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies, comedian-turned-actor Pete Davidson delivers another strong genre performance as the janitor getting lost in mystery. Answers are kept in the shadows for a long time, until a gloriously over-the-top finale.
